Blackstar - RIP David Bowie 1947-2016

January 12, 2016 in Illustration, Life

What can I say? What a huge loss to the world. First Lemmy Kilmister and now David Bowie. I was shocked when I heard the news this morning - as was the rest of the world. Two great musicians gone not much more than two weeks apart.

As I did with Motorhead upon Lemmy's passing, today I listened to David Bowie's whole catalog of music and twelve hours and this illustrated tribute later the music is STILL playing.  It is amazing, how prolific he was, how many songs were HITS.

Safe travels, Mr. Bowie, the world is a better place having had you in it.

Thank you.

Who IS the Poe Toaster and when will they show up?

Who IS the Poe Toaster and when will they show up?

Illustration of The "Poe Toaster" for Baltimore Magazine.

January 05, 2016 in Illustration

I recently had the opportunity to work on a really interesting assignment for Baltimore Magazine about the "Poe Toaster" tradition. For anyone who is unfamiliar with this curious character, here is the backstory:

Beginning in 1949 (or possibly somewhat earlier), on the night of the anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe’s birth (as January 18th becomes January 19th), a mysterious stranger has entered the cemetery and left as tribute a partial bottle of cognac and roses on Poe’s grave. The identity of the stranger, referred to affectionately as the “Poe Toaster,” is unknown. Out of respect, no attempt is made to stop or hinder him. Several of the bottles of cognac from prior years are kept at the Baltimore Poe House and Museum.

On January 19, 2012, after three successive years in which there was no appearance from the “Toaster,” the tradition was declared officially over. However, in 2015, the Poe Society of Baltimore and the Maryland Historical Society held a contest to choose a new Poe Toaster. That person was selected in November and will make his/her first official appearance this January (2016). At this time, the Historical Society and the Poe Society refuse to divulge any details on the new Toaster including the person’s identity, what his/her costume will look like, what his/her tradition will consist of, etc. The only details that are given is that it will still take place at Poe’s grave at Westminster Hall and Burying Ground on January 18-19, 2016.

More information about Westminster Hall and Burying Ground can be found here.

Information about Edgar Allen Poe's Grave the Poe Toaster tradition can be found here.

Big thanks to Kellie at Baltimore Mag for the Art Direction!

Thank you 2015!

December 23, 2015 in Life

Every year I reflect back on the past 12 months and compare December to December. 2015 has been great and I'm thankful that I am able to work as an illustrator. I am extremely grateful for the opportunities that I've had to work with so many wonderful people this past year.  I'm proud of the work that has been done.

I have been thinking about and working on some new creative projects when I have had time in between assignments. I don't have a timeline because my schedule changes weekly but in the coming months I hope to be able to share some of this new work with you! I'm looking forward to 2016 and where this creative adventure road will take me.

Whatever you celebrate, however you celebrate, I wish you all a happy healthy winter holiday and a prosperous New Year. Lets grab 2016 by the horns and go for a ride!

Michele

Portrait of Christopher Hitchens for Chicago Tribune Printers Row Journal.

December 21, 2015

I illustrated the late Christopher Hitchens, for this week's edition of Chicago Tribune Printers Row Journal. Hitchens was an English author, journalist, religious and literary critic who spent the later part of his career in the United states. The article, written by Nick Romeo, discusses Hitchens's strengths and weaknesses in the posthumously published essay collection ,"And Yet...".
