Illustrations for Threadless, Redbook and other arty stuff

May 14, 2012

Hey there! Some good stuff happening lately!

I was asked to work on an editorial illo for Redbook Magazine. I can’t really say anything other than that but it will be on News Stands June 12.

Also: HELP ME WIN!
I have a few of my illos as Tee shirt designs up on Threadless. I thought that they would make some pretty fun shirts. But work will only get picked if you vote for it, so please do! I would LOVE to win get my stuff printed on shirts available to the masses there. Then everyone could get a cool zombie shirt! Every vote counts, and I appreciate yours! Yeah, you gotta register but it only takes a minute and you can vote at this link. Oh, and don’t forget my other two crazy kitty designs as well. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Like Art? Like Wine?
Last, but not least – My illustration, “Bend in the Road”, has been accepted into the New Hope Art League’s “Images of New Hope” juried show at the New Hope Winery. The show is open May 17th-June June 4th. The opening reception is Saturday, May 19th from 1 to 4pm. So if you are in the area and looking for something to do on the weekend please stop by, sample some Pennsylvania Wines and check out the show!

Evening Stroll – Stockton, New Jersey

April 29, 2012

Here is my second entry for the upcoming Images of New Hope show put on by the New Hope Art League. Brian and I spend a lot of time on the weekends wandering around the New hope/Lambertville/Stockton/Frenchtown corridor. There’s a great old wine and spirits shop in Stockton that is called Phillips Fine Wines that carries some good beer that you can’t get in PA.

One evening, around Christmas, we were there and there was a tree that was lit with an insane amount of Christmas lights. It must have had AT LEAST 10 strings of lights on it. It was gorgeous. It was GLOWING. I found it so mesmerizing that I had to stop and snap a few photos of it. Something about the lights and the snow just made me really happy. Small town, quiet of winter, festive lights, you know…quaint. There were a couple of other trees on the street I took some pics of as well but this painting was inspired by that red freakin’ beacon of a tree. I feel sorry for whoever had to un-decorate it after the holidays. Maybe I’m wrong but I suspect that the whole thing ended up in the trash, lights and all. These photos don’t really do it justice.

Thats a lot of lights!

Thats a lot of lights!

Ugly Beginnings Part 2: Not-So-Ugly-Endings.

April 10, 2012

Remember that ugly color study from the last post? Here’s the final piece. The color really looks nothing like the color study – I decided to change it and brighten it up with early spring greens while I was doing it. What the heck, I can do it. No art director for this piece. It turned out nice though. It’s an entry for an upcoming juried exhibition about the New Hope-Solebury area of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. I’m also making a second piece for it which I’ll post when it’s ready. Let’s hope that I get in!
Enjoy!

Ugly beginnings

April 02, 2012

Most non-creatives cannot look at a rough sketch or color study and envision what the final art will look like. Usually when I do color studies for clients I have got to make them look pretty darned close to what the finished art is going to look like so that they don’t think that they are getting something unfinished. It’s the nature of of the business and part of my job. THEN there’s the OTHER times when I know that nobody but me is going to see sketches. This can get really ugly. I can guarantee that the resulting chicken scratch probably wouldn’t sense to anyone else but it’s usually all that I need get started on a finish. Here’s a really ugly example of a color sketch for something that I’m currently working on. I’ll be sure to post the final when it’s ready. Until then, enjoy this little eyesore!
