Michele Melcher

I've been pretty lax with updating my site and blog lately but wanted to announce some good new! I'm so excited to be a part of Sonic Splendor 2 - group show, at Revolution Gallery. My contribution to the show is an oil painting titled, "Space Oddity", which is my tribute to the late great David Bowie. The show opens this Friday, August 3rd 8-11 PM. The address for the gallery is 1419 Hertel Avenue, Buffalo NY. I will be in attendance, so if you are there stop in and say hello! The piece also made it into a quick little feature in the Centerfold section of The Daily Public this week.

Website update, oil painting news.

Renewal. Oil on panel. 2018

Renewal. Oil on panel. 2018

As some of you may already know, last fall I began teaching myself to paint with oils. It is something that I never thought that I would be able to do...they take so long to dry, I hated working with acrylics, painted for years in watercolor, didn't want colors to mix into mud, didn't want to have to start over....you know, all of the self imposed excuses why I WOULDN'T be able do it.

Anyway, I chilled out, watched a couple of Youtube tutorials, bought some Liquin (a brand name dryer) to speed up the process and after a little trial and error, to my surprise, started painting. And now it is all that I think about.

Many of these are small mementomori  type studies. I wanted to start out by doing simple skulls and such to get used to the medium and how the paint works. SURPRISE! I've already sold some, and have a gallery show lined up this summer (TBA).

Now that I have more than 1 or 2 decent paintings, I have made a new section on the site under Fine Art called "Oil Paintings" where you can see them. I'll update it regularly, when there is a piece that is worthy of adding. Thanks for looking!

"FAMILIAR" at Modern Eden Gallery

Michele Melcher

This Friday, November 3rd is the opening of "Familiar", at Modern Eden Gallery in San Francisco, California. In European folklore and folk-belief of the Medieval and Early Modern periods, familiar spirits (sometimes referred to simply as "familiars" or " animal guides") were believed to be supernatural entities that would assist witches and cunning folk in their practice of magic. My piece titled, "Mercy and Giles", will be on display and available through the gallery. The show runs from November 3rd thru December 1st.

  • Title: Mercy and Giles.
  • Medium: Graphite and watercolor on Stonehenge paper
  • Size: 8.5"x15.75" antique wooden frame.
  • Year: 2017
